The Future of Democracy in Asia - Overcoming Poverty is Basic Rights

Taken from The Economist (2010) : Degree of Democracy

Quoting from the interview

(In response to Asian style democracy; State's stability is higher than democratic rights of the people)

Razali Ibrahim: Yes, I have a Chinese friend who is university professor. Last two years, she who has immigrated to America in the young age, has been invited back to her motherland as visiting professor. She stressed that "The rights to earn money is the most important principle of basic human rights". This idea is correct. For those in poverty stratum, despite the fact that they are guaranteed with individual freedom, how much it is meaningful for them.

China is a good example. Under the one party dictatorship, communist regime has managed to improve people's productivity and increasing their income level. Even though poverty is still sizable, many are getting richer and happier. "People's freedom is less importance when comparing to country's growth and stability." This China success has bring influence to other new emerging economies.

" I am not saying we should learn from China. What we are trying to say is, it is unnecessary for us aiming to achieve Western style of democratic state which pay absolute 100% respect of individual rights." ...............
